Update: Cheddar and Indigo

The best way to describe progress on my Churning Stars quilt is “intermittent.” I’ve not spent much time in my sewing room recently. Over the weekend, though, I did find the time to make a few more big blocks — the ones that will finish at 18″ square. Take a look:

Last month I discovered that a seller on Etsy had a Layer Cake of “Cheddar and Indigo,” the fabric line from Penny Rose Studio that launched this project. Even though it was not a bargain, I snapped it up because a) fabric from this line that came out in 2015 is virtually impossible to find now, and 2) I really wanted more of these background fabrics:

If I’m very careful in cutting up these 10″ squares, I’ll be able to maximize the number of blocks that contain the fabrics as background.

Curiously, I was able to find a lot of almost every cheddar and indigo print from the line — I started looking three years ago — but only two of the six light background prints, the ones you see on the left:

I’m especially fond of the smaller of the two background prints. Good thing, as I have plenty of it. And I have enough of the other prints to make at least one more cheddar and indigo quilt. Even though I’ve practically just begun working on this one, I’m already auditioning patterns for a second one.

Is this normal behavior (for a quilter) or am I obsessing?

You’re funny…and normal. I love your blocks. The quilt will be beautiful, just like all your quilts.

    Looking good!
It will be nice to have more fabrics, that you don’t have to tea-dye!
No wonder you snatched up the fabrics. What a find.

LOL! Of course that is normal quilter behavior! While sewing or quilting or binding, I am always thinking of another quilt, and another and another! My friend Lorle said she once realized after making two blue and yellow bed quilts that she was still buying for those quilts! I think we get into a color and think, ‘What if…” and so we kind of get off on a riff! A quilterly color riff! Happy sewing, Dawn! Suzette in Bend, where it is 21 outside this morning, yikes !

I don’t think there is much normal with any of our obsessions with quilting, LOL. But we all do it! Just like most of us who have a favorite fabric will keep buying it so we don’t run out :).

I love your blocks! This is going to be such a beautiful quilt.

Hah! Are you obsessing?? If you are my twin (and I’m pretty sure you are), you ARE obsessing! Feel free to proceed guilt free.

  6. I love how your Cheddar & Indigo blocks are turning out. I also became a bit infatuated with the idea of making a blue & cheddar quilt a couple of years ago. Once in a while I will find some of the Penny Rose fabric online. Nancy Gere at Windham also has a collection named Indigo & Cheddar a few years back. I was able to find a layer cake and then some additional yardage over time. The collections look like they would coordinate well and you may be able to find more of the light fabrics from Windham that would let you make as many blocks (and quilts) as you would like. I may have to become a copy cat and try to replicate your striking star blocks – once I can force myself to cut into my own fabric stash that is. Even though I always love the completed quilt, it is so dang hard to make those first cuts into fabric I have collected for years. The best reward when cutting up our beloved fabric is getting to see the quilt we have been dreaming about become a reality.
