Today is Worldwide Quilting Day and guess how I am celebrating? By buying fabric! I just ordered 11 prints from Katarina Roccella’s latest line of fabric, “Mindscape.” She designs for Art Gallery Fabrics, known for producing premium cottons with a soft and silky hand. Something about it just captivated me.
Truth be told, I’ve been trying to talk myself out of buying this fabric since I learned about it last month. Of course you know the reason: I already have enough fabric in my stash to last me three lifetimes. I certainly don’t need to acquire any more.
But every time Katarina posted about “Mindscape” on her Instagram page, I kept coming back to look. Without a pattern in mind, I wouldn’t know how much fabric to order so I just kept looking. Today I took the plunge because I didn’t want to decide down the road to order and then find out some of the fabrics were no longer available.
One of the aims of Worldwide Quilting Day is to encourage quilters to support their local quilt shops. I buy most of my fabric locally, not only to support the shops but also to be able to see the fabrics in person and touch them. The ones I ordered today are from Hawthorne Supply Company, a family-owned business in upstate New York. I guess you can say I’m supporting someone’s local quilt shop!

I hear you about buying more fabric!!! I couldn’t resist the other day and had to buy some Checkered Element fabric by Art Gallery. I can’t wait to get it and am pretty sure I have the right pattern for it (which I also just bought!!!!). [email protected]
How much did you buy not knowing what you would make?
Ah, the million dollar question! I bought two yards each of my three favorite prints, one yard each of six others, and a half-yard of the two tile prints. (I have a really hard time buying less than a yard of any fabric.)
Quite a shopping accident — er, adventure, as a friend of mine calls it. Once I settle on a pattern, I’ll know if I need to get more yardage.

Beautiful fabrics yes, but …um … how long will it be part of the stash before it gets picked for a project? Just think of the ones that may never get picked. This is not your conscience speaking; it is, alas, just your twin who tries desperately to reign in the fabric hoard! 😉

I notice there is striped fabric in the Mindscape line. I am so afraid of putting stripes in a quilt. Do you have to be concerned about which way they go? Any chance of a tutorial on this??
Such a good question, Patricia. I’m very careful about using stripes in quilts — or any directional fabric, for that matter — for the very reason you point out: they can go in different directions depending on the block design. That said, I am very fond of stripes in binding, particularly when they are cut on the diagonal.
I love the colors! I did support my local shop on World Wide Quilting Day. Backyard Fabrics…Love that shop.
