Reach for the Stars: Block 4 Do-Over

In my last post I showed you my center medallion and first five blocks of Reach for the Stars, the series sampler quilt currently featured in Quilter’s Newsletter magazine. Here’s another look atmy blocks:

You mayremember that I departed from Terri Krysan’s original design and inserted a circle in the middle of my Block 4.I liked the effect very much but the more I looked at my blockstogether on the design wall, the more convinced I was that Block 4 needed an overhaul.Thecircle neededto be bigger for the block to holds its own next to its neighbors.

I took the block apart and added a new center block, choosing a different fussy-cut image to fill the larger circle. Here’s the old Block 4 . . .

. . . and thenew Block 4:

That’s an inset circle, by the way, not an appliqué. Here’s the new blockon point, its proper orientation in the quilt:

Now take a look at my center medallion and first five blocks:

Better, yes? Itjust feels more balanced to me.

I have been watching this and enjoying your progress. That was a really small correction that you made, but it is better – good eye!!

  2. Peg says:

    So pretty!

  3. AnnMarie says:

Yes, better. I find as I get older, I rip out and fix things instead of just settling.

  4. Virginia Hammon says:

A subtle but worthy change. I haven’t had a chance to try the set in circles yet, but I’m eying some Asian fabric with some big ‘bubbles’ on it and thinking, thinking. You’re an inspiration.

Nubs, I hope you consider using your reject block 4 on the back of this quilt. It has its own history worthy of surviving the reject pile!

    xxxooo Diane

  6. It didn’t strike me as being off before, but I do like your ‘after’ block. Wondering – how many times did you look at it and think about changing it? Keep you up at night? I love how yours is coming together with the striking colors. I am infatuated with my neutrals, but it is great to watch yours also!

I noticed it right away but thought I could live with it. But when I saw my first five blocks on the wall, I knew I had to change it.

  7. Sandy says:

Good eye Dawn! I like the enlarged circle better too. Not sure I would have had the patience to redo it though. 🙂
